How Stress Connects to Physical Pain

Episode Notes:

In this episode, Dr. Douglass explains how stress isn’t just a mental struggle; It can create real pain in your daily life.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Tim Douglass, and you’re listening to the Douglass Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Destin on the beautiful Emerald Coast. Today we’re talking about something that I think a lot of people don’t connect the dots on — and that’s the relationship between stress and physical pain.

Now, here’s the thing. When most people come in to see me with back pain or neck pain or tension headaches, they’re thinking it’s a physical problem with a physical cause. Maybe they slept wrong. Maybe they lifted something heavy. And sometimes — yeah, that’s exactly what happened. But a lot of the time, when we dig a little deeper, stress is sitting right there in the middle of it all. And that connection is real, it’s documented, and it’s something I want to help you understand today.

So let me break this down for you. When your body experiences stress — whether that’s work pressure, family stuff, financial worry, any of it — your nervous system kicks into what’s called a fight-or-flight response. Your brain sends a signal that says, hey, we need to protect ourselves. And your muscles respond by tensing up. Your shoulders rise. Your jaw tightens. Your lower back braces. Now, if that stress is short-lived, your body relaxes and everything is fine. But here’s what’s interesting — when stress is chronic, when it just never really goes away, your muscles stay in that guarded, tightened state for days, weeks, sometimes months. And that sustained tension is a direct path to pain.

You know what I hear a lot in this office? People saying, I don’t know why my neck is so tight. I didn’t do anything different. And when we talk through what’s been going on in their life, it almost always comes out — work has been overwhelming, or they haven’t been sleeping well, or something stressful is going on at home. The body keeps score. That’s not just a saying — it’s genuinely how your physiology works.

Now here’s the other piece of this that I find really important. Stress also affects how we perceive pain. When your nervous system is wound up, it becomes more sensitive. Things that wouldn’t normally hurt — start to hurt. Small aches feel bigger. Recovery takes longer. So it’s not just that stress causes muscle tension — it actually lowers your pain threshold. That’s why someone going through a hard season in life often feels like everything is falling apart physically at the same time.

So what can you do starting today? A few simple things. First — breathe intentionally. Slow, deep belly breathing activates your parasympathetic nervous system — that’s the rest-and-digest side — and it physically signals your muscles to let go. Just a few minutes a day makes a real difference. Second — move your body gently. A short walk, some light stretching, even just standing up from your desk more often. Movement breaks the tension cycle. And third — take your stress seriously as a health issue. It’s not just mental. It’s physical. Treating it that way is not weakness — it’s wisdom.

Now, when should you come see us? If you’re dealing with ongoing neck pain, back pain, headaches, or that kind of all-over stiffness that just won’t quit — and especially if you know your stress levels have been high — that’s a great reason to come in. At Douglass Chiropractic, I take the time to actually understand what’s going on with you. Not just the symptom, but the whole picture. We’ll build a care plan that’s specific to you, because that’s the only way to get real, lasting results.

We’ve been serving families here on the Emerald Coast since two thousand nine, and we’ve got your back — in every sense of that phrase. If you’re ready to get some answers and start feeling better, give us a call or stop by. We’d love to see you. Thanks so much for listening today, and I’ll talk to you next time.
