The Truth About Cracking Joints and Adjustments

Episode Notes:

In this episode of the Douglass Chiropractic podcast, Dr. Tim Douglass tackles one of the most common questions he hears in his Destin practice: what is that cracking sound during a chiropractic adjustment or when you crack your knuckles?

Dr. Douglass breaks down the science behind the noise, separating myth from fact and explaining what’s really happening inside your joints when that familiar pop occurs.

Whether you’re a longtime chiropractic patient or just curious about joint health, this episode gives you a clear, approachable look at what adjustments actually do for your body and why that sound is nothing to fear.

Hey there, welcome back. I’m Doctor Timothy Douglass, and you’re listening to the Douglass Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Destin. We’ve got your back — that’s our promise, and honestly, it’s kind of our whole reason for being here on the Emerald Coast.

Today I want to talk about something I get asked about almost every single week. And that is — the cracking sound. Whether it’s cracking your knuckles, your neck popping when you turn your head, or what happens during a chiropractic adjustment… people have a lot of questions about that sound. And honestly, a lot of fears too.

So let’s clear the air. Let’s talk about what that sound actually is, what it isn’t, and why it matters for your health.

Okay, so here’s the thing. That pop or crack you hear — it has a name. It’s called a cavitation. Now don’t let that word scare you. All it means is that there are tiny gas bubbles inside the fluid that surrounds your joints. When a joint moves quickly through its full range of motion, those bubbles release. And that release creates that popping sound. That’s it. That is all it is. It’s not bones grinding together. It’s not something breaking. It’s a completely normal, natural response inside the joint space.

Now here’s what I hear a lot — “Doctor Tim, does cracking your knuckles cause arthritis?” I want to put this one to rest once and for all. The answer is no. That is a myth that has been passed down through generations, probably by someone who just found the sound annoying. There is no credible evidence that self-cracking your knuckles leads to arthritis. Your hands are going to be just fine.

Now — and this is important — there is a real difference between a joint that casually pops on its own and a specific chiropractic adjustment. This is where I want you to lean in a little.

When I perform an adjustment here in the office, I am not just making something crack. I am applying a precise, controlled force to a specific joint that is restricted — a joint that is not moving the way it should. That restriction causes problems. It can cause pain, inflammation, muscle tension, and over time it affects how your whole body moves and functions. The adjustment restores proper movement to that joint. The sound you might hear is just a side effect of that process. The real goal is the movement — the restoration of function.

And here’s what’s interesting — not every adjustment even makes a sound. Some of my techniques are completely quiet, especially when I’m working with children, older patients, or anyone who needs a gentler approach. I have spent over thirty years of my career developing my own adjusting methods, and what my patients tell me over and over again is that what I do feels different from anything they’ve experienced before. That is not an accident. That comes from years of refining what actually works.

So what can you do starting today? If you have a joint that keeps popping on its own — especially if it comes with pain, stiffness, or that feeling like something needs to crack but won’t — that is a signal worth paying attention to. Your body is telling you something is restricted. Don’t just keep forcing it yourself. That can actually irritate the joint over time.

Gentle movement, staying hydrated, and not sitting in one position for too long — those are all things you can do right now to support your joint health. But if something has been nagging at you, if you’ve got neck stiffness, low back tension, or a spot that just won’t quit — come in and let me take a look.

I see patients every day who waited way longer than they needed to. And the conversation always goes the same way — they say, “I wish I had come in sooner.” A thorough evaluation here at Douglass Chiropractic means I get to understand exactly what is going on with your body. No templates. No guessing. Just a real look at what you need and a plan built around you.

We have been serving families here on the Emerald Coast since two thousand nine, and we have built this practice one neighbor at a time. Most of our patients find us because someone they trust told them to come. That means everything to us.
