Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Timothy Douglass, and you’re listening to the Douglass Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Destin on the Emerald Coast. Whether you’re a longtime patient or just stumbling across us for the first time — I’m really glad you’re here.

Today we’re talking about something that affects almost everyone at some point. Back pain. And specifically, I want to share some simple daily habits that can make a huge difference in keeping your back healthy and pain-free. Now, you don’t need a gym membership or fancy equipment for any of this. These are small, practical things you can start doing today.

Let’s start with posture — because this is probably the biggest one. You know what I hear a lot in my office? People say, I don’t know what I did to hurt my back. And honestly, most of the time, it wasn’t one big thing. It was a hundred small things, repeated every single day. Sitting slouched at a desk. Looking down at a phone for hours. Sleeping in a position that puts stress on the spine. Over time, those habits add up. And then one day, you bend down to tie your shoe — and your back gives out. It wasn’t the shoe. It was everything that came before it.

So here’s tip number one. Be intentional about how you sit. When you’re at a desk or even on the couch, try to keep your hips back in the seat, your feet flat on the floor, and your shoulders relaxed — not hunched forward. You don’t have to sit like a soldier. Just think about stacking your spine a little more naturally. And set a reminder on your phone if you need to. Every thirty to forty-five minutes, stand up. Walk around for just a minute or two. That simple break does more for your back than most people realize.

Now here’s the thing — movement is medicine. Your spine loves movement. It hates being stuck in one position for too long. So tip number two is to add gentle movement to your morning routine. Before you even pour your coffee, spend just five minutes doing some light stretching. A gentle knee-to-chest stretch, a slow trunk rotation, maybe a cat-cow if you’ve done any yoga. These movements help wake up the muscles that support your spine, and they get the fluid moving in your spinal discs. Think of it like warming up your car on a cold morning. Your back will thank you for it.

Tip number three is one that often surprises people — and that’s hydration. Your spinal discs are largely made up of water. They depend on you staying hydrated to maintain their height and their ability to absorb shock. When you’re dehydrated, those discs can compress more easily, and that puts extra stress on the surrounding structures. So drink your water. It really does matter.

Now, here’s what I want you to remember. These habits work best as prevention. The goal is to never end up in a situation where back pain is running your life. But if you’re already feeling stiffness, aching, or sharp pain — that’s your body asking for help. And that’s where we come in.

At Douglass Chiropractic, we don’t do cookie-cutter care. Every patient who walks through our door gets a thorough evaluation and a personalized plan — because your back is not the same as anyone else’s. Over more than thirty years, I’ve developed adjusting techniques that are gentle enough for the whole family, but effective enough to resolve things that other providers haven’t been able to help with. That’s something our patients tell us all the time, and it’s something I’m genuinely proud of.

If your back has been bothering you, I’d love to see you. Don’t wait until it becomes a bigger problem. The sooner we take a look, the more options we have.

Thank you so much for tuning in today. Remember — small habits, done consistently, create big changes over time. Take care of your spine, because it’s the only one you’ve got. I’m Doctor Timothy Douglass, and at Douglass Chiropractic, we’ve got your back. Reach out to us anytime, and we’ll see you next time.
