Staying Active Safely After 40

Episode Notes:

In this episode of We’ve Got Your Back, Dr. Tim Douglass of Douglass Chiropractic in Destin tackles one of the most common questions he hears in the office — how to stay active and fit after 40 without breaking down in the process.

Dr. Douglass explains that hitting your forties is not a signal to slow down, but it does mean your body deserves smarter, more intentional movement strategies.

Whether you’re a weekend warrior, a gym regular, or just trying to stay mobile and pain-free, this episode is packed with practical, chiropractor-approved guidance to help you keep doing what you love for decades to come.

Hey, welcome back. I’m Doctor Timothy Douglass, and you’re listening to the Destin Health chat — the podcast from Douglass Chiropractic here in Destin. Today we’re talking about something I get asked about all the time in the office, and honestly, it’s one of my favorite conversations to have. We’re talking about staying active after forty — and how to do it without wrecking your body in the process.

Now, here’s the thing. Turning forty doesn’t mean slowing down. Not even close. I work with patients every week who are running, golfing, paddleboarding, lifting weights, chasing grandkids around the yard — all after forty, fifty, even sixty. But what does change is how your body responds to activity. And if you ignore that, you’re going to end up on my table for the wrong reasons.

So let me break this down for you.

First — your body takes longer to recover after forty. That’s just the reality. The connective tissues, the joints, the muscles — they need more time between hard efforts than they did in your twenties. What this means practically is that you can’t train hard every single day and expect your body to keep up indefinitely. You need intentional rest. Not laziness — intentional recovery. There’s a big difference. When you skip recovery, small irritations in the joints and muscles don’t get a chance to settle. They accumulate. And that’s when you go from feeling a little stiff to dealing with real pain.

Second — and this is huge — your spine is taking on a lot. Every run, every round of golf, every hour hunched over a desk is loading your spine. The discs, the joints, the muscles that support everything — they’re working constantly. After forty, the cushioning in those spinal joints starts to show its age. That doesn’t mean you’re fragile. But it does mean your body is less forgiving of poor posture, bad movement patterns, and muscle imbalances you’ve been ignoring for years. I see this every day. Someone comes in and says, I just bent down to pick something up and threw my back out. That didn’t happen because of one bend. That happened because of years of accumulated strain that finally reached a tipping point.

Here’s what I want you to start doing today. Warm up like you mean it. Not two minutes of light stretching — a real, gradual warm-up that gets blood moving and prepares your joints before you load them. Strengthen your core, and I don’t mean just crunches. I mean the deep stabilizing muscles around your spine and hips that protect everything above and below. And pay attention to how you feel after activity. Soreness is normal. Sharp pain, radiating pain, numbness — those are signals worth paying attention to.

Now, when should you come see me? If you’ve got pain that’s been hanging around for more than a few days, if you’re noticing stiffness in the morning that takes a while to loosen up, if old injuries seem to be flaring back up — those are all good reasons to get evaluated. The goal isn’t just to get you out of pain. It’s to understand what’s actually going on in your spine and joints so we can get you back to doing what you love, and keep you there.

Here at Douglass Chiropractic, we’ve been taking care of families across Destin and the Emerald Coast for over fifteen years. The approach I use is gentle, thorough, and personalized to what your body actually needs — not a one-size-fits-all protocol. People come to us after trying other things that didn’t work, and time and again, they tell us they’ve never experienced anything quite like it.

You don’t have to accept pain as part of getting older. That’s not what aging has to look like.

If anything we talked about today sounds familiar — if you’re dealing with nagging back pain, stiffness, or you just want to make sure you’re moving well for the long haul — I’d love to see you in the office. Just head over to our website and request an appointment. We’ll take it from there.

Thanks so much for listening. This is Doctor Timothy Douglass, and remember — we’ve got your back.
